Logistics Trends in 2020

Logistics is the process of planning and executing the efficient transportation and storage of goods from the point of origin to the point of consumption. The goal of logistics is to meet customer requirements in a timely, cost-effective manner. The market has grown tremendously over the years and there have been significant improvements in logistics infrastructure worldwide; thanks to digitization and groundbreaking solutions in supply chain and logistics.

Technological advancements have strengthened the capabilities and functioning of every element of logistics, right from packaging and labeling to shipment, transportation and last-mile delivery. Changes in consumer demands, the rise of e-commerce and fierce market competition have also enabled a rapid transformation of the industry.

2020 has been depressing and cruel to all of us till now. Everyday, we all are hoping for the best day. Trends, because of the sudden change in lives of people are changing according to needs. Here are some logistics trends for 2020:

  • Data Analytics: A massive amount of data is generated in logistics and supply chain at every level and every minute. All of it can be used to avoid losses and wastage. Companies have started adopting this practice to improve the customer experience and operational efficiency.

Robotics : Introduction of robotics and automation will be a game changer. A lot of forward-looking companies are gradually moving towards 100% automation. For instance, in warehouses, the robots can be programmed to perform tasks like picking, packing and sorting or assist in loading or unloading of goods. It will significantly reduce costs and improve the efficiency in delivery and warehousing.

Drones: Express deliveries and deliveries in remote areas can be executed efficiently with the use of drones. In rural areas, drones can be used to access the remote and inaccessible terrains and in urban areas they can be used to provide faster first and last mile deliveries.

HyperLocal: Hyperlocal is used by Logistics players to provide faster deliveries. They team up with existing local retail networks in a way that they can integrate and access their inventories with online platforms. The retailers fulfill the demand on behalf of the logistics companies when any product from the inventory is ordered.

Alternative energy: Despite headlines to the contrary, there’s more of a focus on environmentally conscious planning today than ever before. This includes utilizing renewable energy within supply chains.Higher fuel costs and regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are driving renewable innovations, including low-sulfur fuels and biodiesel. This is driving more efficient logistics and helping to keep the cost of moving freight low.

Blockchain: Blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system. A blockchain is essentially a digital ledger of transactions that is duplicated and distributed across the entire network of computer systems on the blockchain. Blockchain is also making waves in the logistics pool, where companies are continually searching for ways to work smarter, faster, and more securely—all of which blockchain professes to offer its leading-edge users.
