Digitalisation is now becoming our habit. All our work and data is being stored in phones or laptops. Digitalisation, as we call it today, is sweeping across every aspect of our daily lives in all possible ways. Right from gathering the news we find in the newspapers every morning to the billing process at our neighbourhood grocery shop, it is digital technology that is making tasks faster and more accurate. The process of digitalisation started some five decades back with the advent of computing technologies and digital electronics. Today digitalisation can be seen as a tool of transformation which extends beyond our lifestyle to the way we transact, interact and conduct business.
Across all sectors, be it communication, media, healthcare, retail and manufacturing, we are increasingly seeing the use of digital technology.
Hard drive space isn’t as important now as it once was. That’s because cloud-based software doesn’t require local storage. Data can be stored in the cloud as well, freeing up precious space on the hard drive.
Now, all the data gets stored in our phone or any device in a small chip. It's known as Hard Disk.
It's a hard drive fixed in the electro- mechanical data storage device and retrieve data. It has quick access to large amounts of data on an electromagnetically charged surface or set of surfaces. Today's computers typically come with a hard disk that can contain anywhere from billions to trillions of bytes of storage. A hard disk/drive unit comes with a set rotation speed varying from 4,200 revolutions per minute to 15,000 rpm.
Reynold B. Johnson developed the first real hard drive at IBM, in 1956. Johnson’s team originally experimented with other methods to store data on things like magnetic tape. However, his team discovered ways to store information (in the form of bytes) on metal, magnetic disks, which they could overwrite with new information as desired. This led to the development of an automated disk that read itself in a manner similar to a record player — except much larger. The first commercially available version, RAMAC, had a hard drive nearly the size of a kitchen pantry.
Spin speed (rotations per minute, or RPM) is relatively important. The faster a disk (platter) spins, the faster your computer can find the file you want. A 7,200 RPM hard drive is obviously faster than a 5,400 RPM hard drive. But with external drives, you’ll hardly notice a difference between the two RPM speeds. The same holds true with internal drives, especially with smaller files. However, you’ll see noticeable improvement on a 7,200 RPM hard drive with larger files and applications.
The Need for Data Back .If your computer’s hard drive is damaged, you risk losing all of your digital content. This is why most people back up their content on an external drive in addition to their computer’s internal drive.
A hard drive is of two types internal or external:
Internal means a hard drive is located inside a computing device and has a direct connection to the motherboard, but it’s not always upgradable.
External means a hard drive is located outside the PC and typically connects through a USB or Thunderbolt cable. This option is typically slower due to the connection, but it can also be detached from the parent PC without any major issues.
