All about Adhesive Tapes
Updated: Aug 5
Adhesive tapes are widely used by almost all of us in our day-to-day lives. They can be used by children and adults alike for different purposes. They are one of the most essential items amongst stationery products.
Adhesive tapes are a combination of a material and an adhesive film that are used to bond or join objects together instead of using fasteners, screws, or welding. Applying adhesive tapes instead of mechanical fasteners allows you to use lower temperature applications, which can simplify the manufacturing processes. They also protect your surface as there is no damage from using fasteners or screws.
WHAT ARE ADHESIVE TAPES MADE OF?
Adhesive tapes consist of two elements, the actual adhesive and the backing/carrier. The backing/carrier is what the adhesive is laid on. It can be made up of paper, plastic film, cloth, foam, foil, etc. which is coated with an adhesive and a release liner if needed. This combination of the adhesive and the backing is then wrapped to form a long roll of tape which is then cut into narrow bands to produce several rolls of tape that you see in the stores.
TYPES OF ADHESIVE COATINGS
Different types of tape have different adhesive coatings
Pressure-sensitive adhesives are tacky at room temperature in dry form. They firmly stick to various surfaces and do not need much pressure in order to stick. PSAs do not need any water, solvent or heat activation to bond to materials.
Heat-activated tapes are usually tack-free until activated by a heat source. They require a temperature of 180˚F or higher to bond to materials.
Water-activated tapes are starch or animal glue-based adhesive on a kraft paper backing which becomes sticky when moistened. They are inexpensive and are generally used for sealing boxes.
ADVANTAGES OF ADHESIVE TAPES
Adhesive tapes have a strong structural strength and can be used to replace bolts, rivets or other mechanical fasteners.
They eliminate the need for mechanical fasteners, which does not alter the appearance of your equipment.
They offer uniform thickness and gap filling properties.
They are lightweight and are easy to use and apply.
They are available in a number of variants. You can choose based on your needs from transparent tapes, duct tapes, masking tapes, etc.
